METHUSELAH ARCHIVE CLAIMS
Claim · 2026 · Christian Science treatment (prayer-based spiritual healing)

As reproduced on the church's official Chapter XII page (observed 2026), Eddy's text instructs that prayer alone, delivered as Christian Science treatment without medical means, meets the approaching symptoms and incipient stages of named diseases -- including cancer, consumption, and smallpox -- and restores health.

Eddy’s text instructs the reader to ‘Agree to disagree’ with approaching symptoms of chronic or acute disease, whether it is cancer, consumption, or smallpox, to “meet the incipient stages of disease” with prayer, so that “the judge will say, ‘Thou art whole!’” (Science and Health, SH 390:27-391:6) — a promise expressly scoped to approaching symptoms and incipient stages. This wording is reproduced today verbatim on the church’s own official Chapter XII page. The American Academy of Pediatrics, in an October 2009 letter to Senate leaders reported by The New York Times in March 2010, stated there was a “complete lack of scientific evidence of the efficacy of prayer in treating any illness or disorder in children.”
