This promoter-authority claim is quoted verbatim by Samuel Hopkins Adams in 1912 from a sworn company guarantee then in use, crediting Dr. Kilmer with discovering the formula and asserting, in the present tense, that he was still actively practicing his profession. Adams shows this was already false when made: in the same chapter he reports that Dr. S. Andral Kilmer, though alive, had had no connection with Swamp Root for many years, and quotes Kilmer’s own sworn complaint that the company falsely held him out as “the duly licensed, qualified and acting physician in charge of” its medical department. The claim is logged as testimonial-grade and refuted on that direct contradiction.

A related but not identical company guarantee, printed in a notarized “Certificate of Purity” reprinted in the 1940 almanac (Wellcome Collection, work qxbtjjda, dated Aug. 25, 1936), echoes the same authority-invoking pattern in the past tense, again crediting Kilmer with discovering the formula and stating he had long been successfully and actively engaged in his profession. Read narrowly, that past-tense wording is compatible with Kilmer’s actual 1878-1892 involvement, so it is not logged here as a second refuted claim in its own right. What the 1936 certificate does, without disclosing it, is invoke the name and credentials of a man with no connection to the business for forty-four years and no life at all for twelve, as personal backing for that year’s product; that omission is treated in the practitioner and case entities’ financial-conflict and disconfirmation material, not as a separate verified-false claim here.
