Samuel Hopkins Adams’s 1912 reporting singles out these two named diseases for direct physician rebuttal. Having stated the product’s alcohol content and prescribed dosage to an unnamed physician “who has had large experience in this class of illness,” Adams records the exchange: asked about alcohol in kidney disease, the physician answered “None that I know”; asked about Bright’s disease specifically, “It would kill the patient before his time.” Adams separately states that sugar, Swamp Root’s principal solid ingredient, made up about a third of the medicine, and that the same physician, told the sugar percentage, said the effect of the prescribed dosage on a case of diabetes mellitus would be that “Malnutrition would follow, and the patient would waste away and die.” This claim is logged as testimonial-grade (a label and advertising assertion, not a controlled trial) and refuted on the strength of that contemporaneous professional assessment: rather than merely lacking evidence, the marketed dosage was affirmatively contraindicated in both named diseases according to the medical opinion Adams obtained and reported at the time.
