The narrow factual kernel beneath DNP’s marketing: it does increase metabolic rate and does cause measurable weight loss, first demonstrated in Tainter, Stockton, and Cutting’s 1933 JAMA progress report and confirmed by the mechanistic literature since (DNP uncouples mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation). This is a real, replicated pharmacological effect — but weight loss and a raised metabolic rate are surrogate endpoints, not the hard endpoints of health, safety, or survival on which a weight-loss product must ultimately be judged. It is, on its own, silent about safety: the same mechanism that burns fat is what makes an overdose lethal, and no study has established a dose that reliably separates the two.
