Historic Marker: Granula

The marker text records Granula as an early breakfast cereal invented circa 1876 in Dansville by Dr. J. C. Jackson, made of graham wheat flour and water mixed, baked, then broken up. The page narrative states Jackson developed granula around 1863 but did not secure the trademark until 1876; that the cereal -- graham flour mixed with water, rolled out, baked, then crushed, requiring soaking before eating -- was manufactured by the Our Home Granula Company from Spruce and Milton Streets and later Main Street, Dansville, operating through at least 1920; and that after Dr. John Harvey Kellogg began marketing his own cereal under the same Granula name, Jackson's trademark claim forced Kellogg to rename his product Granola -- the name still used industry-wide today.
