NOTES

The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress is one of the largest collections of early twentieth-century press photography in the United States. Items in the collection carry the standard LoC rights designation “no known copyright restrictions” rather than an explicit public domain declaration, because the Bain agency photographs predate systematic copyright registration for photographs and no successor rights-holder has been identified. The LoC Prints and Photographs Division treats this as equivalent to “no known restrictions on publication.” The image has been present in this collection since the Library’s acquisition of the Bain archive and is reproduced on multiple institutional sites without restriction notice.
