SUMMARY
Detailed scholarly history of the Liebig Extract of Meat Company (LEMCO) from its origins to its eventual transformation. Documents Giebert's initial approach to Liebig in 1862, the founding of LEMCO in London on 4 December 1865 with a capital of £150,000, and the opening of the factory at Villa Independencia (Fray Bentos), Uruguay in 1866. Records Liebig's financial terms as scientific director: an immediate lump sum of £5,000, an annual salary of £1,000, and 2% of the company's profits for five years. The only invention that made Liebig significant personal income. Documents production of tinned corned beef from 1873 under the Fray Bentos brand, and registration of 'Fray Bentos' as a UK trade mark in 1881.
