A 2025 Australian Pharmacist review of the balsam notes that balsamic resins such as gum benzoin show, at best, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects under modern assessment. A 1959 Smithsonian history (Griffenhagen and Young) records that the balsam's modern unofficial descendant, U.S.P. Compound Tincture of Benzoin, is described in the United States Dispensatory as 'occasionally employed internally as a stimulating expectorant in chronic bronchitis' and 'recommended in chronic dysentery ... but is of doubtful utility' for that chronic dysentery recommendation specifically, not for internal use generally.

Gum benzoin (also called benjamin) is an aromatic resin and one of the balsamic ingredients that persisted in Robert Turlington’s Balsam of Life as the twenty-seven-ingredient original formula was reduced over time; a 2025 Australian Pharmacist account records the ingredient count eventually falling to eight, with gum benzoin, storax, Tolu balsam, and Peru balsam remaining as the balsamic core. Turlington’s patent and pamphlet built no distinction between this resin’s plausible topical or inhalant use and the balsam’s claimed internal effects, from curing the stone and gravel to giving “certain relief” in consumption. The 1959 Smithsonian history by George Griffenhagen and James Harvey Young identifies the balsam’s modern unofficial pharmacopoeial descendant as Compound Tincture of Benzoin, and quotes the United States Dispensatory’s assessment that its recommended use in chronic dysentery is “of doubtful utility.”
