context:Documented as an undisclosed adulterant in Swaim's Panacea, a proprietary 'vegetable' patent medicine sold from Philadelphia. Corrosive sublimate itself was a long-established, harshly corrosive mercury salt used in regular medical practice as an external antiseptic/caustic and, in small doses, internally; its presence in Swaim's Panacea mattered because the product was marketed as free of mercury entirely.
MECHANISM CLAIMED
Not claimed by the seller at all: William Swaim's own printed 1828 notice to the public swore the Panacea contained neither mercury nor any other deleterious drug. James Harvey Young's history of American patent medicine records that, contrary to that oath, corrosive sublimate was mixed into at least some parcels of the Panacea, and that three separate chemists proved this by analysis.

Corrosive sublimate (mercuric chloride, HgCl2) is one of the most aggressive common salts of mercury: a caustic, antiseptic poison that nineteenth-century medicine also used deliberately, in carefully bounded doses, as a topical antiseptic and as an internal remedy for syphilis (a use later abandoned as mercury compounds gave way to safer treatments). Swaim’s Panacea, a Philadelphia patent medicine sold from around 1820 as a purely vegetable preparation of sarsaparilla and oil of wintergreen, was marketed on the explicit claim that it contained no mercury and could safely be given even to infants. James Harvey Young’s The Toadstool Millionaires (1961) records that the Philadelphia Medical Society’s investigating committee inferred mercury exposure from patients’ physiological symptoms, and that three separate chemists subsequently proved by direct analysis that at least some batches of the Panacea in fact contained corrosive sublimate. The undisclosed presence of one of the harshest common mercury compounds in a product marketed as mercury-free and safe is the toxicological core of this case.
